In this paper, a kind of position sensor failure detection and fault tolerance of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)-based Electro-Mechanical Brake(EMB) Systems are considered. The rotor position information is essential for the filed-orientation control of a PMSM and it should be updated in real-time. In-order to give a fault tolerance to EMB systems, an estimation process for the rotor position should be evaluated and the position estimation is updated by using the model-based flux linkages using motor currents and voltages. It is illustrated by some experiments that the rotor position is well estimated by measurements of motor electric variables and it can be used for the bumpless transfer to sensorless motor control.
