Fundamental Shear-Strength Properties of the Lilla Edet Clay

1960
Synopsis The Paper gives an interpretation in terms of fundamental shear-strength parameters of a series of triaxial tests on a slightly overconsolidated, highly sensitive clay. A study of the variation in true cohesion with water content indicates that after sedimentation, some of the samples have developed bonds between the particles with the nature of chemical cementation. The bonds are first broken when the samples are reconsolidated at pressures higher than a certain critical value. The test results indicate furthermore that a part of the preconsolidation effect observed from results of consolidation tests may be due to such bonds.
