Effects of dietary protein on broiler breeder hen performance have been examined in the past, with most emphasis placed on protein intake during either the entire rearing period, the prelay period (18 to 24 wk), or the laying period. Research conducted by Lilburn et al. [l] revealed that providing a lower protein diet (13.5% vs. 15.5% crude protein) to pullets from hatch to 21 wk reduced total egg production, while increasing protein intake during the prelay period has been shown to positively influence hen-day production [2,3]. Studies have also reported that egg production is not influenced by crude protein (CP) intake during the laying period
