Comparative performance of Fincoid Nova T and ML 375 IUDs.

1985
Of the European countries Finland reports the highest frequency of IUD use with 30% of fertile aged women fitted almost exclusively with copper IUDs of which Fincoid Nova T and Multiload Cu375 are the newest and most frequently used. This paper shows that these 3 modern copper IUDs have slight differences in their performances but all are effective safe and recommendable for contraception particularly for parous women. Altogether 1333 insertions were performed at 3 health centers and at 5 private outpatient clinics. The pregnancy rate was lowest for ML 375 and the expulsion rate was lowest for Nova T. Removals for medical reasons were made most frequently in the Fincoid group least in the Nova T group and removals for personal reasons was also lowest in the Nova T group. The rate of complete expulsion was low and similar for all devices. The main reason for IUD removal similar in frequency for all devices was bleeding and/or pain. Infection was seldom a cause for removal in the present study. Randomization of the study population was effective; there were no significant differences in the structure of age and parity among the 3 types of IUDs under study. In each group about 85% of the women were parous ages varied from 24 to 34 years in 60% of the women. These figures and the overall study design represent general normal IUD practice in Finland where oral contraceptives are considered primary fertility control for young nulliparous women.
