Study of an european all optical transport transparent network based on the 16×2.5 Gbit/S transmission

In this work we report a transmission study on the possibility of implementing an all optical transparent network based on WDM 16x 2.5 Gbit/s systems, which connects the main cities of Europe. We show that severe transmission problems are present and that they are due to the impact of the fibre nonlinear Kerr effect in terms of cross phase modulation. Numerical results shows that such an impairment can be strongly limited by the use of the dispersion management with fibre gratings and good performance can be achieved for the longest paths of the order of 2000 km.
