Effects of head hypothermia on levels of NO, SOD, Glut in serum of patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage encephalocele

2004
Objective To investigate changes of levels of nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutamate (Glut) and the effects of head hypothermia on the levels of NO, SOD, Glut in serum of patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage encephalocele (HIHE). Methods The 61 cases with HIHE were divided into head hypothermia group (HHG, 31 cases) and observation group (OG, 30 cases); 30 healthy subjects were selected as control group (HCG). All cases of HHG were treated by head hypothermia. The NO, SOD, Glut in serum in 61 cases with HIHE in the HHG, OG at 2th, 10th day after hospitalized and 30 cases in the HCG were measured by nitrate reductase method, hydroxylaimine oxidation method and highperformance liquid chromatography(HPLC), respectively. The life quality on survivel were assessed separately in the 61 cases with HIHE. Results The HHG, OG had a higher NO, Glut and lower SOD than the HCG at 2th day after hospitalized (P0.01). There were significant differences in the NO, Glut, SOD in the HHG at 7th day after treatment than at 2nd day after hospotalized (P0.05,P0.01). There were significant differences in the NO, Glut, SOD in the HHG than the OG at 8th day after treatment (P0.05). The Neurological deficiency score (NDS) and activities of daily life (ADL)were significantly lower in the HHG than that in the OG after treatment (P0.05).Conclusion The head hypothermia can reduce the levels of the NO, Glut in serum and improve the life quality on survival in patients with the HIHE.
