A Stochastic Constitutive Model and Multi-Field Approach for Modeling the Dynamic Response of Cellular Materials

2005
A multi-field approach is developed for simulating the dynamic response of cellular materials. A stochastic constitutive model is incorporated for representing the stress-strain behavior of cellular solids, however, a description of the coupled response of the permeating fluids also is included. This new approach is used to study the influence of various permeating fluids and the effects of aperture size and loading rate on the continuum-scale response of such systems. Results demonstrate that the permeating fluid can play a significant role in the response of cellular materials, contributing to the load-carrying capacity and affecting rate dependence and signal propagation speeds. Furthermore, the results point to the usefulness of the multi-field formulation and provide evidence to suggest that any modeling approach developed for cellular materials provide a proper accounting of the pressure evolution and flow behavior of the fluids present in these material systems.Copyright © 2005 by ASME
