Considerations About the Standard Spectrograph Layout

We received our first optical grating as a gift and we started to construct our first spectrograph full of joy and happiness. After completing the task we implemented our booty onto the rotary disk und started with first measurements. We knew fairly well what signal strength to expect but were quite astonished to see a signal that was far too small. The reason was a complete mystery to us so we started to find out why. First, we found out that neither the optical elements nor the CCD camera were potential sources. Eventually Klaus suggested the grating to be the problem. He then discovered that the grating was optimized for ultraviolet light and that it was simply inserted up-side-down.
