WARABANDI SYSTEM’S LIMITATIONS AND THEIR IMPROVEMENTS A REVIEW

1994
This paper reviews the design and operational rules and presents an analysis of the major issues of warabandi system and their consequences on performance of irrigation system at distributry and watercourse command levels. Inequities in water distribution do exist at secondary and tertiary levels that may be minimized by developing procedure that takes into account the seepage losses alone the water channels. Developing alternative sources of water, excessive trading of Water among the shere holders (31% to 51% of turns), increasing subdivision of land priority considerations. The authors have suggested to prolong warabandi cycle to 2 weeks and develop infrastructure to establish water industry  on commercial basis at watercourse command level. The water charging system should be reviewed and made compatible with other sources of water.
