Film-Making: Researching and Learning Through Pocket Film-Making

2020
This chapter considers the potential for film and film-making to evoke a romance for ideas in learners as researchers. It invites the reader to consider the pedagogic merits of film-making as a method of getting individuals into the field. Drawing on practical examples of participant-produced film with first-year undergraduates and MBAs, the chapter contemplates: how film production might encourage research-based learning, how we inspire learners to see their worlds anew and, why film production might be a particularly fertile method of collaborative enquiry in research terms. In answering these questions, the chapter demonstrates how the ‘smartphone’ can act as a conduit for the application of research and learning through practical examples of successful projects. This includes a step-by-step guide to using film in your own research-led work and teaching practice.
