SPREADSHEET-BASED QUEUING MODELS

1987
This paper describes how microcomputer-based spreadsheet programs, such as Lotus 1-2-3, can be used to implement queuing models of varying levels of sophistication for use in traffic analyses. The models discussed may be used to estimate the delays caused by queuing conditions as well as reductions in delays resulting from highway improvements. The more complex models may also be used to estimate the physical extent of vehicular queues. The latter is important in determining the potential for queue 'spillback' onto other roadways, causing capacity reductions with the potential for further queue propagation. The models presented may be used to analyze the impacts of capacity-reducing incidents (accidents), work zones, and weather conditions, although most applications will involve queuing which occurs under normal operating conditions.
