The invention relates to a supported catalyst material (20) for a fuel cell (10). This comprises an electrically conductive, carbon-based support material (21) and on the carrier material (21) deposited or grown catalytic structures (28) having a multilayer structure (core-shell structure). The core layer (23) comprises an electrically conductive bulk material which is disposed in direct contact with the carbon-based substrate material (21). The thin surface layer (26) has a catalytically active precious metal or an alloy of such. The preparation takes place with separation of the corresponding Ausgansmaterialien directly from the gas phase onto the support material (21).
