A rapid grossvisual appraisal of enzootic pneumonialesions was madeof87lungsata local abattoir andthelungswere thensetaside andexaminedinmore detail. A sampleofpulmonarytissue was takenfromeachlungandsubmitted forbacterial andhistological examination. Theprincipal investigator whohadperformed thegross and detailed lungscoreswas thenused to assess theagreementoftwo inspectors who were scoring lung lesionsin the abattoir. The Pearson's correlation coefficient betweengrossly scoredlungsand scores derivedfrom a detailed examination was 0.94. Usinghistological examination as thegold standard, rapidgrossexamination had a sensitivity of76% and a specificity of71%.Usingbacterial recoveryas a goldstandard yielded a sensitivity of77% anda specificity of51%.Thesensitivity and specificity ofinspectors 1and2 comparedtotheprincipal investigator were: sensitivity = 97.5%and specificity = 97.4%forinspector 1, and97% and98% forinspector 2. Thekappavaluesforbothofthe inspectors comparedtotheprincipalinvestigator were 0.95suggestingthatdesignated layinspectors consistently agreed withtheprincipalinvestigator.
