Method for controlling the warm-up in an internal combustion engine, the warm-up is divided into at least two phases (P1 and P2) and wherein the internal combustion engine in a first phase (P1), when the catalyst is still cold, is controlled in the lean operation and in a second phase (P2) when the catalyst is already heated somewhat, as far as the ignition timing is moved to late that combustion is not yet completed at the time of the opener of an exhaust valve.
