Diffusion in quasi-one-dimensional nano- and microobjects

2011
A new approach to investigations of the volume and surface diffusion in quasi-one-dimensional nano- and microobjects is described in application to the diffusion of tungsten from the substrate into a carbon whisker crystal. The proposed experimental technique employs special positioning marks formed on the whisker surface. The interrelated processes of volume and surface diffusion have been simulated using a combination of the integrated field sources and finite difference methods. The coefficients of volume and surface diffusion of tungsten atoms in carbon whiskers have been estimated.
