Musa balbisiana Colla pseudostem biowaste mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles: Their antibiofilm and antibacterial potentiality

Abstract Green synthesis of nanoparticles is one of the most focused areas of research that uses either plant materials or microorganisms replacing harmful chemicals. Current study was carried out to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using aqueous extract of ash derived from Musa balbisiana Colla pseudostem, a plant biowaste and study of its application as an antibiofilm and antibacterial agent. The synthesized NPs were characterized by UV–Visible spectrophotometry, HR-TEM, XRD, SEM and EDX analysis. The NPs with size 45 ​–65 ​nm revealed strong antibiofilm efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa at a concentration of 100 ​μg/ml. The ZnO NPs also showed excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria that include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
