Designing and Evaluating Selection and Recruitment in Healthcare

2018
There is a long history of research in selection and recruitment, but less research has focused on the specific issues relating to the healthcare professions. In this opening chapter, we first explore the context of healthcare roles and the implications for how to approach the design of selection methods and processes. Key principles in designing selection processes are introduced and various evaluation criteria used to judge the quality of selection methods and recruitment practices are offered. The core topics addressed in this book are briefly reviewed, which are categorised into three main parts including (i) the effectiveness of different selection methods, (ii) designing selection systems and (iii) broader issues in recruitment. To demonstrate some of these topics in practice, two international case studies are presented.
