A Review of Damage Assessment Models in the Maritime Domain

2017
ABSTRACTShip accidents may lead to serious consequences such as human casualties, economic loss or environmental damage. Often, it is difficult to predict the damages and subsequent consequences of these accidents – particularly at the vessel design stage, when accident scenarios and circumstances are uncertain. In a continually evolving industry such as shipping, the need for regular review of damage models is paramount. This paper reviews damage assessment models commonly used in the maritime industry. In particular, the paper consolidates the information that is required for damage assessment, and identifies the different input variables and output parameters for several different models. The results of the review are tabulated in a series of handy look-up tables that can be used by both academics, and industry practitioners. Taking into consideration the evolving maritime industry, and the emerging ocean uses, the authors also provide their recommendations about future developments in terms of damage ...
