On the decay of highly excited states produced in ion-atom collisions☆

Abstract Experimental results on delayed emission of Ly-α radiation due to cascading from higher states are reported for oxygen ions excited in both solid and gaseous targets. We find striking similarities in the measured cascade intensities for excitation in gases and solids. Numerical calculations of cascade yield curves are presented for various distributions of initial ion excitation.
