Fundamentals of Electron Microscopy

2009
This course provides a general introduction to the field of Electron Microscopy for graduate students in the physical and biological sciences. General concepts of electron microscopy techniques will be discussed, such as specimen preparation, electron beamspecimen interactions, contrast mechanisms, resolution, experimental limitations etc. The lectures will be in close connection with the concurrent laboratory course EMS230L. The goal of this course arrangement is to transfer both fundamental theoretical and hands-on experimental knowledge to enable the attendees at the end of the quarter to run first basic electron microscopy experiments by themselves. EMS230/230L is a pre-requisite for the advanced course (EMS232,232L), in which more advanced techniques will be discussed.
