THE QUINCY MINE TRAMWAY

1997 
In 1997, tramway service began on Quincy Hill in Hancock, Michigan to transport visitors from the hoist house of the Quincy Mining Company to the entrance of the mine for underground tours of this famous mine in Michigan's Copper County. The Quincy Hill area is part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park which was established to commemorate the copper mining heritage of the area. The tramway is a cog railway design that was developed and built through the efforts of volunteers from the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. This paper briefly describes the background and characteristics of this interesting project.
