남아공 디아스포라 작가가 바라본 모국의 이미지와 역사적 회한 ―자케스 음다의 『엑셀시오의 마돈나』

2019
This thesis aims to analyse the issues of racism and sexual harassment for non-white women represented in The Madonna of Excelsior of South African novelist, Zakes Mda. Mda has examined South Africa’s political and historical issues in his novels since he was forced to leave his home country with his family. That was because his family members were victims of Apartheid policy. Writer’s life like this made him focus on subjects originated in motherland. He criticizes legal and ethical inequalities, contradictions and racism reality seen in the process of release of white men and imprisonment of only black women in The Madonna of Excelsior, based on South Africa''s sex scandal which occurred in Excelsior of South Africa in 1971, between white men and black women, The main reason for this discussion with great importance is by demonstrating that they are the ones who broke the law of immorality-the interracial sex prohibition law created by white people to isolate blacks, to prove that how white people''s beliefs is just fictional that have been asserting racial purity. This theme is closely related to the epic intentions of Mda, which portrays a true story that actually happened in South Africa. It is about white people''s racial discrimination against non-white people as well as white men''s sexual assault on black women who have been overlooked in the South African and about how usual overall-violence was against these people. Through this discussion, this paper reveals that although the issues of racial discrimination and sexual violence depicted in this novel are the subject that appears in other African novels, Mda reinterprets, centering on such topics, the history of race before and after apartheid through differentiated epic strategy of ridicule and satire against racial assailants.
