Bone Marrow Transplantation for Treatment of Preleukemic Syndromes

1979
The indication of bone marrow transplantation for treatment of preleukemia is discussed in view of present knowledge of its pathophysiology, current results of bone marrow transplantation and recent achievements in animal models which may improve the results of clinical bone marrow transplantation. More of the pathophysiology of preleukemia will be understood, when in rare patients with an identical twin donor bone marrow is given without further treatment of the recipient. More frequently an HLA-identical sibling may be available. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation should be considered in younger patients following a conditioning treatment with Cyclophosphamide or total body irradiation.
