10Gbit/s, 9,000km IM-DD Transmission Experiments Using 274 Er-doped Fiber Amplifier Repeaters

1993
The Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) will make possible reliable transoceanic optical communication systems that are transparent to bit-rate. Such systems have the potential to be upgraded after installation by making changes to the terminals. Several experiments show the capability of the EDFA for long distance communication systems1,2,3,4. The collaboration between KDD laboratories and AT&T Bell laboratories has demonstrated the feasibility of EDFAs for transpacific optical communication systems at 5Gbit/s2. In this paper, we present the results of an intensity modulated, direct detection (IM-DD) 10Gbit/s, 9,000km transmission experiments.
