institutional complexity in Firm-NPO partnerships

2016
This study investigates the confrontation between competing institutional logics at the organizational level in the context of firm-NPO (Non-Profit Organization) partnerships. Drawing on qualitative data from two partnerships between firms and international NPOs, it identifies two distinct approaches adopted by NPOs to resolve the conflicts and to maintain a successful partnership. In addition, this study examines the transformation of NPOs from informal entities into more formally organized entities as a result of their interaction with for-profit organizations. The paper contributes to the institutional logic and cross sector partnership literature by identifying the mechanisms that enable firms and NPOs to establish successful partnership, despite the challenges imposed by the different institutional logic of partners.
