Effect of 6% hydroxyethyl starch on the plasma interleukin-1 levels in septic rat

2004
Objective To investigate the effect of 6% hydroxyethyl starch on the plasma interleukin-1 (IL-1) levels in septic rats and to explore its role in the inflammation of sepsis. Methods Sepsis was produced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in rat; 6% hydroxyethyl starch was infused at a dose of 30ml/kg for 1h,the plasma concentration of IL-1 was measured by ELISA.Results Plasma IL-1 increased at 5h following CLP in all rats, while decreased in hydroxyethyl starch group after 1h infusion, compared with control group. Conclusion 6% hydroxyethyl starch inhibited the elevation of plasma IL-1 levels in sepsis, which indicate that it may modulate the inflammation during sepsis.
