NO-STICK SURFACE : CONDUCTIVE CONCRETE USED FOR BRIDGE DECK DEICING

Conductive concrete is being used for bridge de-icing as an alternative to chemicals and other additives needed to supplement plowing. Conductive concrete is already used in settings where high conductivity is needed, such as anti-static flooring, electromagnetic shielding and cathodic protection if steel reinforcement in concrete structures. But traditional conductive concrete couldn't meet performance requirements for bridge decking at affordable prices. New research sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Roads has developed a conductive concrete overlay and is being used in a demonstration project on the Roca Spur Bridge near Lincoln. The four main elements include temperature sensors, power switches, current monitors and an operator interface.
