The EDWIN project

EDWIN is one of several projects designed to develop the information systems of the Highways Agency (HA) under the Better Traffic Data Programme which aims to meet the emerging requirements of the agency. The HA collect traffic count data from three different types of traffic monitoring sites. Currently data for assessing network performance and strategic planning are collected, processed and validated by several different organisations, who estimate values where data are missing. The HA is planning to introduce a global database to be the repository for all traffic data, known as the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). The National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) will be collecting all the data used for network performance and strategic planning, carrying out the validation and estimation process and supplying it directly to the EDW via a single EDW interface with NTCC (EDWIN). Prior to the EDW's availability, data will be supplied to existing processes. The purpose of EDWIN is to streamline the data collection, validation and in-filling processes and to speed up the supply of data to the EDW. A major feature of EDWIN is the use of the CAVEMAN model to validate the data. The EDWIN process is summarised in the text and as a schematic.
