FUE in South Asians

2018
The technique of follicular unit extraction (FUE) has transformed the hair transplantation procedure by removing the problem of strip excision and the resulting donor area scar. It has progressed from a few hundred of grafts extraction by the manual technique to the latest automated FUE techniques which allow the extraction of a large number of grafts in a single session with relatively low wastage of grafts. However, the size of the session in each patient varies because of the different scalp and hair characteristics which are influenced a great deal by their ethnicity. These characteristics influence the various stages of the actual technique of the procedure as well as the final outcome. Hence, a surgeon should take these differences into consideration while performing hair transplantation to improve the result while at the same time minimizing complications. In this chapter we will highlight the key points of the FUE procedure in the South Asian population and also share some tips for improving the cosmetic outcome based on our experience.
