HIVs and AIDS in East Africa.

1994
HIV seroprevalence rates are as high as 20% among low-risk individuals in some countries of East Africa. Levels of infection and AIDS do however appear to be lower in Ethiopia and Djibouti relative to the other countries in the region. HIV prevalence may vary dramatically both between urban and rural settings and within smaller communities. The high level of HIV prevalence among young adults in East Africa has spawned significant transmission of HIV. HIV incidence prevalence and prevention and control measures are presented for Burundi Djibouti Ethiopia Kenya Rwanda Somalia Tanzania and Uganda. AIDS research activities in Tanzania and Uganda are also discussed. Patterns of opportunistic infections in Uganda are described under separate subheadings on mucocutaneous involvement the gastrointestinal system the pulmonary system the central nervous system and the lymphoreticular system. Patient care in Uganda is discussed.
