A device for inquiring the number of students in a self-study room and distribution of occupied seats currently in real time comprises a camera arranged in the self-study room, and is characterized in that the camera is connected with an embedded master control unit; the embedded master control unit is connected with a WEB user or a mobile phone client through the Internet. A method for inquiring the number of students in the self-study room and distribution of the occupied seats currently in real time includes the following steps that (1) the camera is arranged in the classroom and connected with the embedded master control unit, and the embedded master control unit is connected with the WEB user or the mobile phone client through the Internet; (2) the camera is started to collect images of the self-study room in real time, information of the collected images is transmitted to the embedded master control unit, seat coordinate information is stored in the master control unit in advance, and in consideration of the situation that students bend head to read books and consequently it cannot be guaranteed that human face information of students can be collected at every moment, the embedded master control unit identifies whether seats have already been occupied by students through a human face positioning program in combination with hair, arms and other characteristics of students; (3) coordinate data are transmitted to the mobile phone client or the WEB user through the Internet, so the number of students in the self-study room and distribution of the occupied seats can be inquired in real time currently. According to the device and method, not only is the number of students known more accurately, but also the distribution situation of students can be detected.
