An improved design of a noninvasive near-infrared brain oxygenation monitor

1993
Noninvasive determination of oxygen delivery to the brain was obtained by using a newly designed three wavelength optical system, which consists of low power laser diodes and photo detectors. Using this near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system, the authors investigated the relationship between directly measured jugular venous O/sub 2/ saturation (S/sub j/O/sub 2/) and regional cerebral O/sub 2/ saturation (rSHbO/sub 2/) as determined by NIRS. Results from ten cardiac surgical patients show good quantitative correlations. >
