A Study of Vehicle Queue Length Measurement using Millimeterwave Radar

2012
In Korea, attempts have been made to measure vehicle queue lengths by using loop coil sensors so as to control traffic signals as part of traffic congestion control. These days, many loop coil sensors are used for measuring vehicle queue lengths, but they can be used only to determine whether or not vehicle queues exceed a certain length. In addition, such sensors incur high damage maintenance costs. So, the authors will propose to apply the millimeter wave radar for measuring vehicle queue lengths more precisely. The authors conducted some experiments of the fixed-beam radar on the practical road in Korea and experiment of scanning radar on the multi-lane road in Japan. This paper will introduce the results of two type millimeter wave radar experiments that were used to measure vehicle queue lengths.
