The influence of ambient atmospheres on the exciton emission of cadmium sulfide

1964
Abstract Recently it has been shown that an intrinsic exciton emission from the surface of CdS is observable at room temperature. The character of this emission as influenced by certain gaseous ambient atmospheres has been studied. A correlation has been made with photo-conductivity and dark conductivity under related conditions. Oxygen has been found to be chemisorbed and water vapor physically adsorbed on the CdS surface, causing a decrease and an increase in the exciton emission intensity, respectively. A simple model of the CdS surface is proposed which accounts for the observed results.
