Impact of big data in healthcare system—a quick look into electronic health record systems

2021
Abstract The growth of data is bringing immense changes in humans’ life. The rapid maturity and stability of secured big data Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems are going to be the key differentiators in the cyber world. The proliferation of IoT and abundance of data generated in the digital era has drawn great attention in many sectors, such as the business sector, energy sector, transportation, social media, and greatly in the medical field. The healthcare system is currently experiencing a data overload derived from the digitization revolution. There are multiple streams of data entering into the healthcare system beginning with electronic health records (EHR). Many healthcare systems suffer from poor management where research and development are frowned upon in favor of increasing profits elsewhere. The goal of this chapter is to lay down a foundation on what aspects a healthcare system should adopt to run full-scale analytics, to have the ability to grow and develop algorithms to ease day-to-day functions, and to make human life bigger and better. We explore the influence of big data analytics and related technologies to support healthcare systems deliver accurate, timely, and quality health assistance to the patients. We then narrow down and present a short review of the challenges and methodologies adopted in EHR and specifically concentrate on three factors: (1) analysis of EHR systems to Burnout, (2) analysis of EHR systems and productivity, and finally, (3) analysis of EHR systems and data accuracy.
