Cognitive theory, identifiability and human reliability analysis (HRA)

1990
The relationship between cognitive psychology and human factors engineering is examined in the context of HRA. Some difficulties in achieving pragmatic engineering goals with existing human factors tools are discussed. Some dangers in the wanton use of mathematical curve-fitting techniques are illustrated along with the evils of premature attempts to quantify ambiguous psychological concepts. A strategy for combining cognitive psychology and reliability engineering is sketched
