Acrylic cements for bone fixation in joint replacement

2014
Abstract: This chapter discusses the application of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cements as used for joint replacement surgery. The chapter first reviews the chemical composition of PMMA bone cement and its clinical application and function. The chapter then discusses the relationship between the chemical composition of PMMA bone cement and its handling and mechanical properties. Additionally the application of key additives being incorporated into PMMA bone cements is presented. The chapter also discusses the mixing and application of PMMA bone cement in joint replacement surgery. The chapter concludes by highlighting the problems or issues associated with acrylic-based bone cements.
