Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA-DTG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (Py-GC-MS) were used to characterize artificially degraded wood. This wood mimicked the properties of waterlogged wood. A good measurement of holocellulose, lignin, and ash was achieved via TGA-DTG; phenolic derivatives were recognized via Py-GC-MS; carbonyl formation was observed by FTIR.
