Automatic extraction of building elevation contours based on LIDAR data

This paper presents a boundary extraction method of contour approximation for facade building based on 3D laser point cloud data. The method generates grids with a certain density according to the view projection of point cloud data at first. Then, detect the outline of grids through the mark and finally describe the actual contours of buildings with boundary feature for further. The experimental results show that the algorithm does not need other auxiliary data, and describes the inside and outside contours of the building more quickly and stably, especially in the complex urban environment without being influenced by the sampling frequency and the density of point clouds. The extraction accuracy of building boundary can be up to 90% or more.
