AN EVALUATION OF MOTOR CYCLE BRAKING PERFORMANCE

1994
The deceleration performance of motor cars under braking has long been able to be determined and the resultant speed from their tyre marks easily calculated. Correctly applied, the brakes of a motor cycle should not result in the presence of tyre marks being left on a roadway, particularly from the front tyre. This absence of marks results in difficulties in making a reliable determination of the speed of a machine involved in a collision. This paper gives results of a number of tests conducted by riders of varied experience on identical machines on a surface of known friction value and compares those results with the known skid distance of a 'conventional' vehicle.
