Retrospective case education in reducing incidence of fall at department of cardiology

Objective To improve the safety awareness of patients and their families and the effect of preventing falls by retrospective case education, and to effectively reduce the incidence of falls at department of cardiology. Methods 120 patients with high risk of falling at the department of cardiology were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 60 cases in each group. The control group took education and safety health education about daily life on day 2 of hospitalization, and on Wednesday and Saturday weekly from then. The experimental group took education about daily life and safety health education on day 2 of hospitalization, watched PPT together on Friday weekly. Results The experimental group were better in application of preventive measures and safety education knowledge than the control group (all P<0.05). The incidence of fall and medical cost were lower and the hospital day was shorter in the experimental group than in the control group [5.00% vs. 16.67%, (2 126.39±342.57) yuan vs. (2 857.49±415.08) yuan, and (17.53±2.44) d vs. (25.17±3.86) d; all P<0.05]. Conclusion Retrospective case education can effectively reduce the incidence of fall at department of cardiology, hospitalization time, and medical cost, and can improve patients’ satisfaction to nursing care, nursing quality, and doctor-patient relationship.
