espanolResumen: En este articulo se examina el impacto que tuvo la guerra civil espanola, como hito historico y fundacional, en actores sociales relevantes de la politica y la cultura de Chile. Para evidenciarlo, se destaca en primer lugar la incidencia de la guerra civil en los medios de prensa y el campo intelectual de los anos treinta, y la importancia de los acontecimientos espanoles en la formacion del Frente Popular chileno, que alcanzo el poder tras las elecciones presidenciales de 1938. A continuacion, se estudia el papel de la contienda en las memorias -y otros textos testimoniales- publicadas por autores chilenos a finales del siglo XX y comienzos del actual, asi como las lineas de continuidad que en ellas se trazan entre la Republica Espanola y su derrota a manos de Franco en 1939, y la Unidad Popular de Salvador Allende que terminaria con el golpe de Estado de 1973. EnglishAbstract: The article examines the impact of the Spanish Civil War as a foundational historical event for important Chilean politicians and intellectuals. It studies the repercussions of the civil war in the press and the cultural field of the thirties, and in the formation of the Chilean Popular Front, which triumphed in the presidential elec tions of 1938. Several books of memoirs -and other testimonial texts- published by Chilean authors in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have highlighted the importance of the conflict and established lines of continuity between the Spanish Republic and its defeat by Franco in 1939, and Salvador Allende's government of Popular Unity, which would end tragically with the coup d'etat of 1973.
