Time and resolution: experiments in high-definition image making

2009
AbstractHigh-definition (HD) technology is powering a paradigm change within the digital domain. This article is an attempt to reveal and explore the aesthetics, the technologies and theoretical issues that are at stake through the embracing of this new medium, whilst trying to be mindful of the effects of remediation. As such, this is a report of the enquiry undertaken on a practical level over the first year of a creative fellowship. This is fundamentally concerned with whether increased resolution creates deeper engagement and interaction for an audience and how that engagement functions through audience response. HD is only the first of many levels or quanta of resolution that is now available to us and is the first sign of a change in the use of these powerful and intelligent technologies and their implied meanings, as yet un-described within contemporary media theory.
