Jonathan Jones: Untitled (salt)

2012
In 2009 Jonathan Jones undertook a journey from Ahmedabad to Dandi and Dhrangadhra in the region of The Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, retracing the route of Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi's Salt March, which defined a turning point in India's quest for independence from colonial rule. Gandhi's historic Salt March continues to be widely regarded as one of the most powerful acts of non-violent civil disobedience in the demand for social justice, so the opportunity to visit this landscape provided Jones, an Aboriginal Australian artist, with the opportunity to reconsider both the legacy of Gandhi's historic action, as well as to engage with local communities negotiating new social and ecological concerns in the region.
