Optical communication network

1994
PURPOSE: To minimize the total volume of a component by using a silicon chip having a compact component for performing the distribution of broadcast signals and wavelength selecting signals. CONSTITUTION: This optical communication network is provided with a primary transmitter which transmits primary optical signals having a primary wavelength to a plurality of remote stations from a central station and a plurality of secondary transmitters which transmit secondary optical signals having secondary wavelengths respectively corresponding to the remote stations. The primary and secondary signals are separated from each other by means of a rough distribution WDM(wavelength division multiplexer) 190 and the primary signals are transmitted to the central waveguide 200 of an array containing waveguides 140. An element 135 distributes the signals to all waveguides 180 connected to distributing fibers. The secondary signals are transmitted through an optical fiber 220 connected to the end section of a waveguide 210 on the side separated from a free space area 170 and the element 135 functions as a dense WDM and guides the signals to the corresponding distributing fiber from each waveguide 180.
