2007
Background and AIM: Neonatal morbidity and mortality rates of prenatal diagnosed surgical patients decrease with immediate postnatal evaluation and early proper preparations and proper time and proper operation. The aim of this study is to describe the effects of the prenatal diagnosis in newborns with the congenital surgical anomalies on their postnatal outcomes. Patients and method: During the 17 month periods between January 01,2004 and June 01,2005; 118 surgical newborn interned in our department. Prenatal diagnosis were done in 69 cases, 49 cases had not got prenatal diagnosis. We analyzed all records of these patients retrospectively. Results: Postnatal diagnosis, and time of operation, and duration of hospitalization and mortality rates were found similarly between two groups; because of late admission to our department in prenatal group. Mortality rate was very similarly between two groups, because of different of patient numbers of the disease in each group. Conclusion: Antenatal knowledge of these surgical abnormalities; forewarning the obstetrician and alerting thepediatric surgical team for resuscitation, immediate postnatal evaluation and timely early intervention, the appropriate preparations and measurements can potentially decrease neonatal mortality and morbidity; although the parents anxiety could be increased according to the literature.
