Intelligent networks: perspectives for the future

The author analyzes key trends in intelligent network functionality, beginning with a review of the principal technical drivers which influence the distribution of functionality between the network and CPE. It is shown that continued advances in microcomputer cost/performance will permit the implementation of more complex processing functions in low-cost CPE. It is also shown that the usability of complex services may be enhanced by this trend. Addressing, routing, connection management and customer network management are examples of network services areas which are not affected by the trend towards greater CPE intelligence. Furthermore, most services seem to require the cooperation of intelligent CPE and an intelligent network for efficient, usable implementation. Finally, based upon the diffusion of similar technologies, he argues that the rate of introduction of advanced microcomputer-based CPE will be sufficiently long to support the current intelligent network. >
