Isolation of bacteria with the ability of degrading sulfur dioxide and research on their immobilization

Seventeen bacterial strains were isolated from springs and their capabilities of degrading sulfur dioxide were tested.The results showed that the strain R1 (Thiobacillus ferrooxidans) had stronger SO2 degrading capability.Sodium alginate was used to embed strain R1 and effects of single factors on SO2 degrading capability were analyzed.Sulfur dioxide gas was flowed through the shaft filled with CA balls,and the SO2 degrading rate was calculated as high as 97.01%.The results indicated that immobilized bacteria could be used to deal with SO2 gas of low concentration but their stability needs further investigation.
