Chapter 41 – Desktop Video Conferencing: A Systems Approach

1997
Publisher Summary Recently, a number of social and technical factors have combined to generate resurgence in the implementation of desktop video conferencing systems with considerable attention being paid by human-computer interaction professionals. The advantages of video communication in the current environment of distributed, interdisciplinary work groups are saving money, saving time, avoiding travel, and enriching interpersonal communication. However, many human factors considerations make the study and implementation of video-mediated communication systems challenging. This chapter provides a systems approach to the discussion of human factors issues related to the use of desktop video conferencing systems. Each component of the system—communication technology, conferencing technology, physical environment, social environment, and task environment—is discussed separately in the chapter from a human factors point of view. The chapter also presents guidelines, methods, and issues to consider when designing video conferencing systems that promote effective communication.
