RF system design with optimum combining diversity using sectored antennas for high bit rate indoor radio communication systems

This paper describes the overall RF system design for the MMIC implementation of all indoor radio LAN system. Specially, it focuses on a new application of the sectored antenna system with optimum combining in order to accommodate high data rates. We evaluate the performance of the proposed system so that we suggest a required Tx power for a (18 GHz band) TDMA system application and describe a method for reference signal generation. For example, the proposed configuration with maximal ratio analysis requires only 15.9 dBm transmitter power in 100 ft office (30 ns RMS delay) to reach the minimum 30 Mbps data rate at 10/sup -4/ uncoded BER with a 4 element antenna system, and 51 Mbps data rate with a 6 element antenna system at 10/sup -2/ outrage rate. In the case of optimum combining, only 6dBm Tx power is enough to get the same performance. Furthermore, compared to selective diversity systems, the proposed system can properly adapt for any element location as well as a wide range of frequencies.
